Thursday 13th May 2021
This morning we took some time to reflect on HMS Hood and her 1415 Crew members who were lost with her almost 80 years ago. There were 1418 crew members in total, only 3 survived.
In 1934, the Hood was anchored in Loch Eriboll. During their stay, members of the crew came ashore and set-out the ship’s name in stones on the hillside above the village of Laid.
For several years now Durness Primary School are proud to have been involved in repainting the Hood Stones and we hope to do this again this year.

On Monday 24th May 2021 it will be 80 Years since HMS Hood went down.  We will take part in Shine a Light by lighting a candle in remembrance of the Crewmen.

We Will Remember Them

Different methods of weighing
We’ve been doing some weighing work in maths this week, thinking about heavier and lighter or balanced weights, experimenting with different ways to weigh objects and how to get accurate readings from scales.

Tuesday 20th April
Today Diggers enjoyed sowing sunflowers 🌻 planting salad leaves and painting the picnic table for the nursery today. Well done Durness Diggers. Great job with lots of different skills used!

We were kept busy again today at Diggers. We cut some willow branches from the very wild willow tunnel.
Then we hung an old fishing net to the trees to stop our football going into the bushes. It works a treat!

Welcome Back
We hope you all had a fabulous holiday. We have made a wonderful start to the term with lots of fun activities and good work going on. I just wanted to let everyone know about a couple of updates. First, due to a sense of evil and villainy descending upon Ms J, weekly homework tasks are now being issued. They’ll be given out on a Monday and are to be handed in by Friday each week. Homework jotters have been sent home and any completed homework can be recorded in them. Secondly, and in the spirit of Halloween, Durness Primary will be celebrating this spooky holiday with some fun activities in school on Friday. Children are invited to dress up (though we would ask children not to wear costumes with masks, or to take in accessories that might get lost) and get ready for some fun games. Remember to prepare a good trick, lest you go without your treat! 👻🎃🦇

October Holidays
Our October holidays start tomorrow 9th October at 12:30pm.  School re-opens on Monday 26th October.

Busy bees in the garden!

What great weather to be out working in our veggie plot on Friday. We are trying to get on top of the weeds…we planted lots of cabbages and cauliflower ( big thank you to Islay’s granny Aileen for these )…the willow tunnel we planted a couple of years ago is really bushy now. We have been weaving in the branches- it makes a great den.

The second plot has become pretty over grown so we will leave it for this year and give it a good coat of seaweed and sheep manure for the winter.

If you could spare any time helping out in the plot, after school, weekends etc please let me ( Ms Lee) know. There are quite a few adult jobs to be done!

We were delighted to see our artwork made into tea towels and bags at the village hall this Saturday. In the summer term Kate and Charlotte from the RSPB visited our school and told us all about this mysterious nocturnal bird.  Corncrakes migrate from West Africa and Durness is the last place on mainland Britain that they are known to breed . The males make a loud rasping croak which can be heard in certain spots around Durness on still nights from late April –  early August. Last summer only six males were heard.  The RSPB are working with crofters to create corncrake habitats.
